Charles Gounod - 19th century French composer.

Charles-François Gounod, French opera composer, was born in Paris on June 17, 1818, and died in Saint-Cloud on October 18, 1893. He graduated from the Paris Conservatory, winning the Prix de Rome for his thesis. He is best known for adding words and a solo voice to the Prelude in C Major from Johann Sebastian Bach's Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, thus creating the famous Ave Maria.
