The song was composed by Jimmy Destri and Debbie Harry, who admitted that they tried to create something similar to their previous hit Heart of Glass, tweaked with a slightly western vibe. The song's title has no fixed meaning, but it is most often taken to embody power and futurism. Its sound is a mix of rock, disco and so-called new wave music.
The video for the song Atomic shows the band on stage in what looks like a post-apocalyptic nightclub. Debbie Harry wears a garbage bag as a futuristic costume with a punk vibe. The audience in the club is also dressed in similar clothes. The video features a guest appearance by top model Gia Carangi, who gets out of a limousine at the very beginning of the clip and then appears in brief shots. David Mallett, meanwhile, is responsible for the direction.
